The Shining by Stephen King: Most beloved horror novel doesn't disappoint! 5🌟
My 500th read in this world and the review that sparked my first ever blogpost!
The Shining by Stephen King is one of the most loved horror books and one that is recommended constantly, it is a psychological character study of Jack as he descends into insanity and madness, not in a No Longer Human by Osamu Dazai but in a more, ima be a psychopath ril quick uwu way. The horror aspects does not primarily focus on the physical atrocities of what humans can do but the motives and reasonings behind it.
And the world building is INSANEE, AND THIS IS NOT EVEN A FANTASY BOOK 🤭 there's so many details and ideas that Stephen King implements in thes novel and doesn't just tell you that x happened, then y happened, he actually gives you an overview of the world, and the setting even though most of it only takes place in the Overlook Hotel. It is simply one of those books where you can learn even random facts about the world around you even if it may seem trivial to even know about. Furthermore, the aspects of the mind and its connection to the world is one that deserves recognition and I'm proud that this became one of the most treasured and valued novels of the 20th century. The atmosphere being made is one of its most highlighted strengths and that is the most critically praised part of Stephen King's writing.
As for the Psychological horror aspect, I was certainly impressed just as always since ive already read Stephen King novels before and his writing is just fitting for psychological horror novels. Even though I am a seasoned splatterpunk reader (aka, that one horror genre that is literally just torture porn cuz damn torture do be in every single page), the scenes happening in this book may not be the worst things to happen to humankind and totally not the worst things ive read but the way its written makes you feel unsettled and disturbed.
It may be pretty troublesome and have great pressure to read this behemoth of a book (600 pages AND its not that easy to read) but all of it becomes worth it at the end.
